Dr. Drew Pinsky an ex-addict, say former friends

Through his VH1 reality series, ‘Celebrity Rehab’ and ‘Sober House,’ David “Dr. Drew” Pinsky has helped millions of viewers, and quite a few guests fight the dangers of drugs. And friends claim Drew’s skills are based on first-hand drug use.

In an interview with Life & Style, two of Drew’s former co-workers at KROQ, the LA-based radio station on which the Doc got his break, allege the 51-year old USC graduate only has such a remarkable knowledge of drugs because he was a frequent user himself.

“I asked him to do this segment called ‘Ask a Surgeon’” recalls KROQ’s Jim Trenton about meeting Drew at a party in 1982. “Listeners could get answers to their romance and medical questions.”

The result was a huge success, and [now renamed as 'Love Line'] it’s still on the air to this day. But once those first shows were over, Trenton claims he and Drew spent most nights at parties — with drugs;

“He used to say, ‘Jim, I love cocaine!’” Trenton claims. “Drew did coke with a lot of different people, including me, on numerous occasions.”

Joanna Swylde, a fellow KROQ employee supports Trenton’s claims, saying the trio even used to snort lines of coke off off the covers of 12″ vinyl albums in the station’s control room.

“We’d do it during the breaks in the show,” she tells the scribes.

But, possibly avoid the life-shredding joys of a VH1 lawsuit, Trenton now says Drew showed self-control;

“I don’t think he was addicted to it, he just used it recreationally. By the late ’80s, he’d quit – We all stopped doing it.”

Oh, well I suppose that makes it okay??
