The Who’s Super Bowl appearance under protest because of Pete Townshend registered sex offender

PeteTownshendandRogerDaltrey[1](HMG) – As we reported here a while back, classic 60′s rock-band, The Who, led by its two sole survivors, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, are set to be the headline act at next year’s Superbowl.

Considering CBS uses several ‘Who’ songs in their CSI shows and they have the rights to the broadcast next year, choosing The Who seemed like a patent no-brainer.  Problem is Pete Townshend is considered a registered sex offender in the UK from 2003 to 2008.  More on the considered part in a sec.

Anti-child abuse groups Child AbuseWatch and particularly ‘Protect Our Children’  have called for Townshend to be stopped from entering the country and be taken into custody upon his reentry into Florida so that the provisions of FS775.21 may be applied — Sexual Offenders and Predators, which requires he submits DNA samples and fingerprints and poses for a police mug shot before being allowed to perform during America’s  biggest sporting event in Miami, Florida.

So what did Townshend actually get busted for?  He used his credit card to access a site which had child porn on it. He told the authorities it was for research he was doing to document how easy it is for real pedophiles to access child porn. Despite an investigation that turned up no child porn evidence in his home or computer, he had to register as a sex offender in the United Kingdom from 2003 to 2008, because of the credit card purchase.  How this all plays out remains to be seen, but the NFL gets top dollar to run commercials during the Super Bowl, by sponsors who tend to get cold feet real fast when threats of boycotts emerge.
