George Stephanopoulos(HMG) – George Stephanopoulos, the host of ABC’s “This Week” and chief Washington correspondent, has suposedly been offered the chance to replace Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America.” Sawyer will be leaving her long-held position next week, to take over the “World News” anchor spot from Charles Gibson.

ABC News President David Westin is convinced that Stephanopoulos can fill the shoes of Sawyer.  Despite the fact the former advisor to President Bill Clinton, who is known for his political reporting, would as co-anchor on the mostly fluff early morning format,  be cast in a new role. Westin reportedly met with Anne Sweeney, the president of Disney-ABC Television Group and told her Stephanopoulos was his choice for the “Good Morning America” job.

If all of the parties in the discussions come to terms, Stephanopoulos would work alongside co-anchor Robin Roberts. “Good Morning America” news anchor Chris Cuomo, who is also in contention for the job, is expected to leave the network if Stephanopoulos is hired.  There has been no word on who Westin has in mind to replace Stephanopoulos on ‘This Week.”
