Obama’s State Dinner A Glamorous And Sparkling Night
Posted on November 25th, 2009 by olivia(HMG) – Washington has been buzzing for weeks about the Obama’s state dinner, which invited Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife, Gursharan Kaur, as guests of honor.
Last night, the occasion occurred, just as sparkling and glamorous as one might expect such an event to be.
The Obama’s worked to give in their own touch, making the primary themes diversity in American, and bipartisanship.
A large tent was erected on the main lawn, and dinner was served, created by Ethiopian-born American chef, Marcus Samuelsson of Aquavit.
The meal was a mixture of Indian and African-American inspired dishes, such as curry prawns, chickpeas, and okra. A pumpkin pie tart was served for dessert, a throwback to the season.
Governor Bobby Jindal (R-Louisiana), Colin Powell, M. Night Shyamalan, and Jhumpa Lahiri were among the guests.
Michelle Obama looked absolutely stunning. The First Lady wore a gown made by Indian-America designer, Naeem Khan.
The entire evening seemed to go well, with references from President Obama about Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Prime Minister Singh spoke about how Obama’s presidency had ‘captured the imagination of millions of Indians.’
All in all, it was a shining example of pomp and preening in the name of diplomacy. It seemed to be a good night.
