Charlie’s Angels returning to ABC

Published on November 13, 2009 at 2:53 PM

Having successfully relaunched the 1984 sci-fi flop, ‘V’, the ABC suits are now copying their friends in the movies and remaking several more of their cheesy old shows.

And first on the list is a new Charlie’s Angels.

The original series, which co-starred the late Farrah Fawcett debuted on September 22nd, 1976 and ran for five years. There were two failed attempts at revival in 1988 and 2004, but now ‘Sarah Connor Chronicles’ producer, Josh Friedman has signed on to create and produce a new version.

Assisting Josh in this unwelcome quest will be original producer Aaron Spelling’s partner, Len Goldberg and the actress Drew Barrymore, who featured as ‘Dylan’ in the 2000 film.

And the insult of remakes is not finished yet;  Sony Television is also scraping the cobwebs off another ABC hit from the golden 70′s era of fondue and flares — ‘Fantasy Island.’ But this time it’s planned as a reality show. Mark Burnett is in charge of the project but they can’t find a network, so maybe that trauma can still be avoided.

Variety says the updated ‘Angels’ will be heavily re-tooled for a new generation, but still pay homage to its kitsch-laden past. There’s no word on the air date or actors, but we’ll let you know when that gets announced…
