Mariah Carey’s ‘Precious’ role originally offered to Helen Mirren

Mariah Carey on the promotion circuit for her new movie, almost took an embarrassing fall (photo above via NBC) as she stumbled down a step on the set of the Jay Leno show in New York last night. The singer ditched her usual glamourpuss ways to play a social worker in new movie ‘Precious’. Carey, once panned as a horrible actress for her cinematic disaster Glitter, which eventually prompting the pop princess to be hospitalized amid an emotional breakdown had some huge shoes to fill when she accepted her acclaimed role as the part was originally offered to Oscar-winning dame Helen Mirren.
“Someone told me Helen Mirren had been offered the role of the social worker, but had to pull out. So it was daunting to try and fill the shoes of this great Academy Award-winning actress,” Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.
“But then I decided to snap myself out of that mindset and figure out what I could bring to the role,” she added.
Carey’s physical transformation into a run-of-the-mill, unglamorous New York social worker has wowed critics with her performance in the poignant story of an abused teenage girl. It’s funny how things like that workout in Hollywood. I would have thought going from Helen Mirren to Mariah Carey would be a big stretch but it worked out!
