Terminator franchise may yet be reborn

If you were among those who endured ‘Terminator: Salvation,’ you might be depressed to learn there is now a high probability of even more awful films.
The rights to the Terminator franchise are now up for grabs [yet again] after Halcyon Entertainment, who created ‘Salvation,’ declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy to avoid a costly dispute with the firm who lent them $25-million to buy those same rights two years ago from Mario Kassar, producer of the immeasurably superior, ‘T2 – Judgment Day.’
The new owner will be able to make new Terminator movies, TV shows and other spin-offs that exploit the profit potential of this enduring cash-cow. Thankfully, the sale does not include control of the first two films – the good ones!
Coming just weeks after the rights to that awful 80’s fad, ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ were bought by Nickelodeon for $60m in cash and Disney absorbed Marvel for an eye-popping $4-billion, the auction has stirred up great interest. Summit Entertainment, makers of the ‘Twilight’ franchise are said to have an interest, as are the simpletons behind Sacha Baron Cohen’s last box-office bomb, ‘Bruno.’
The UK’s Financial Times also reports that all the major film studios are keen to place bids, with Sony Entertainment currently believed to be in first place.
There’s no word, as yet when the gavel will fall, but once a winner emerges we’ll bring you the word…
