Fully Restored Cinematic Classic Metropolis Hits Berlin 83 Years After It’s Creation
In a throw back to one of the all time classic films of all time, Metropolis is going to be held this year at the Berlin International Film Festival. It will be the first time it has shown there on the big screen since it was first premiered in 1927.
Fritz Lang has been known as a great ever since he wrote the sci-fi classic, but it was never seen in it’s entirety. On February 12 it will be shown uncut for the first time, giving audiences a special treat that any silver screen enthusiast would kill for.
“Just about no other German film has inspired and influenced history as greatly as Fritz Lang’s ‘Metropolis,’” director Dieter Kosslick said about the planned showing.
“We are especially pleased and honored to be able to present the reconstructed original cut of this legendary and seminal film classic at the festival’s 60th anniversary.”
The film had originally been cut by 30 minutes by the studio, after it’s length failed to impress audiences. It’s cut version was released instead, becoming an instant classic in the genre.
For those who have never seen it, it is a romance set in a futuristic world where classes clash. It was seen as both a beautiful tale of love and science fiction, as well as a powerful commentary on the struggles that occur when a class is oppressed.
The lost 30 minutes were thought to be forever gone, but after intense work by the Murnau Foundation, it will be shown in it’s entirety in what is the most anticipated film of this year’s festival.
