Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” Might Surprise You

Michael Jacksons This Is It Might Surprise YouI am a fan of the late Michael Jackson but not an avid one.  When I heard there was a new movie coming out about him, I figured it to be exploitative and some kind of dramatic history of his life.  I grudgingly glanced at a couple of the reviews that came out today and was surprised by what I saw.  The film has been assembled from rehearsals from April through June 2009 for the concert tour scheduled for this summer.  The reviews are pretty consistent in agreeing Michael looked far from the sick or strung out man forcing himself through grueling rehearsals, he was portrayed to be.  Instead he appears to be in superb physical condition despite his age, 50 at the time of his death. Roger Ebert comments:

His choreography, built from such precise, abrupt and perfectly-timed movements, is exhausting, but he never shows a sign of tiring. His movements are so well synchronized with the other dancers on stage, who are much younger and highly-trained, that he seems one with them.

The LA Times notes:

Though occasionally ragged, his voice is strong — lush on such ballads as “Human Nature” and cutting in rockers like “Black or White” and “Beat It.” And his dancing is utterly assured. It’s tough to believe he was 50, he seems so feather-light and vigorous.

The film’s prologue states that this footage was meant for Jackson’s personal library, yet it’s hardly raw, as Director Kenny Ortega has molded this into a documentary that gives a look at a side of Jackson never seen previously. None of us will ever know the real Michael Jackson and that might be a good thing, but this film seems to gives us some real insight into the working process of the artist. I think seeing Michael, work with his musicians and dancers and just gearing up to perform again is a great gift and they only consolation prize we get since his life was cut short just before he was ready to show us one more time.
