Mathew Broderick Mucks Up ‘Messenger’
Let’s face it, Mathew Broderick is a legend in the theater game. But his bad habits are also well known, and while easy to forgive on an ‘on’ night, they are just as easily infuriating when he screws up.
That was more or less the sentiment this week after his preview showing of ‘Starry Messenger’, his newest Broadway show. According to audience members, he was woefully unprepared for the play, and it was more like watching a 10-year-old in their first dress rehearsal, than watching a veteran actor in a professional role.
“Broderick should be fined for this sort of thing. The theater, the producers, Kenneth Lonergan [director] and Broderick should be ashamed to have let an audience in for this,” an angry audience member was quoted by The NY Daily News.
Apparently, Broderick messed up ten times in the first act, always forgetting his lines and asking for help off stage. He didn’t even bother covering, either, just said ‘Sorry’ under his breath, and then repeated the lines with lackluster enthusiasm.
Now, he is well known for waiting until the last minute to learn his part, but this is still a rare occurrence for the man. Either way, the official showing has been pushed back a week, and hopefully he will be ready by then. Otherwise, he might have a mob on his hands.
