Meghan McCain picture causes furor on Twitter
In what has all the hallmarks of an ill-advised imitation of Miley Cyrus’ recent self-serving faux-pas, Meghan McCain, daughter of former Republican hopeful, John, got herself into trouble with her Twitter account.
McCain, 24, posted a photo [seen here] on her Twitter page, which was taken, so her followers were told, whilst engaged in “a spontaneous night with my Andy Warhol biography and takeout.”
The reaction, however, was less kind than she’d planned.
An hour after the unguarded photo was released to the world, McCain tweeted again, “So I took a fun picture, not thinking about what I was wearing. But apparently anything other than a pant-suit and I’m a slut” Which was soon followed this irate prose, “This is why I’ve been considering deleting my twitter account – what was once fun now seems like a vessel for harassment.”
Then came a third allegedly victimized tweet, “When I’m alone in my apartment, I wear tank tops and sweat pants. I had no idea this makes me a “slut.” I can’t even tell you how hurt I am.”
The photo soon vanished, but despite all the ‘hurt’ the account did not move. In fact, like the attention, the tweets just kept coming. Next was this entry;
“Ok, I am getting off Twitter! Promise not to delete my account until I sleep on it. Thank you for the nice words, supporters.”
Some of McCain’s 60,000+ feathery fans were caught by surprise at this fit of hi-profile pique, “I find it difficult to believe she didn’t expect some reaction to that!,” wrote one. Others tweeted expressions of sympathy for the critical storm the photo created, “I don’t understand why people are having a cow over this,” wrote Pamela1483. “Whats the problem – that she has boobs??”
After letting the situation ferment for two days, and her departure from Twitter still an incomplete threat, McCain tweeted once more on Thursday, “This has been an embarrassing experience but also a learning one. I will not be deleting my twitter account, but will be more careful in future about my use of the medium.”
With all the upscale education her Daddy could buy, you would think Ms. McCain might have learned the new golden rule – ‘Be careful what you put out there online — it can come back and bite you.’
