Proving that rehab and addiction are no longer exclusively a young person’s game, it’s just been reported that veteran Hollywood actor, Burt Reynolds has checked into an [as yet unnamed] clinic to seek ongoing treatment for both drug and alcohol problems.

The problems first surfaced on August 21 when Burt, now 73, was found semi-conscious and covered in blood after a fall at his mansion in Hobe Sound, Florida. His valet drove Burt to the ER, and doctors there became so concerned they moved him into the county’s mental health clinic in West Palm Beach.

And Doctors there refused to discharge him unless he sought immediate help for what they regarded as obvious addictions.

“He’s been increasingly abusing booze and prescription drugs – mainly painkillers.” a source tells OK. “There have been many times when he’s been completely out of it, and he’s ended up in the ER twice in the last two months alone.

Since making his debut in the crime drama, ‘M-Squad’ in 1959, the Georgia-born actor has appeared in more than 150 motion picture and TV productions — including almost being cast as “Han Solo” in Star Wars. But his most recent appearance was a small part as ‘Chubby’ in ‘My Name is Earl.’ back in May.

Burt has never been known for, or acknowledged any form of substance abuse, but had previously admitted he was now largely dependent on the powerful sleeping aid, ‘Halcion’ which he used to suppress serious joint pain caused by years of bone-shaking stunts in his earlier movies.

Burt’s reps are so far making no comment, but we’ll keep you updated on this unfolding story…
