Jessica Seinfeld wins plagiarism case against Chef
In the worthy conclusion of a story we covered a few weeks ago, Jessica Seinfeld, wife of Jerry Seinfeld, everyone’s favorite comedian who’s famous for nothing, has been cleared of all guilt in the plagiarism suit brought against her by a less well-known chef.
Orin Snyder, Jessica’s lawyer told CNN that Judge, Laura Taylor Swain had dismissed all claims brought against Jessica’s book, “Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kids Eating Good Food.” and his client was now vindicated, “This is a complete victory for Jessica,” Orin said.
In the lawsuit, originally filed in 2007, Jessica was accused of taking ideas from a cookbook entitled, ‘The Sneaky Chef,’ but the Judge didn’t buy into the author’s complaints, “The Judge ruled that no copying occurred here, given that the works are very different, and that Jessica’s book has a completely different feel. ” Snyder explained to reporters.
The facts are these: On February 6 of 2006, Missy Chase Lepine -Â the Sneaky Chef’s author – sent a 140-page book proposal to Harper Collins. She received a rejection. On May 24 she sent the same firm an updated work, which was also turned down. In April of 2007, she published her book on the ‘Running Press’ label.
Six months later, Jessica published her book — through Harper Collins.
The attorney for Missy Lepine, says his client will appeal the dismissal, and will refile her claims of defamation against Jerry Seinfeld in New York State Court. That lawsuit claims that Jerry made a “malicious, premeditated, and knowingly false and defamatory attack” on Lapine, in the form of a comment while guesting on the Letterman show about how Lepine uses three names, and that most people who do turn into assassins, such as Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth.
“The claims against Mr. Seinfeld for defamation are still alive,” said Howard Miller, Lepine’s legal eagle. “He just says he is joking; but we don’t think calling someone an assassin and a wacko is a joke.”
With such a rich celebrity sauce this particular dish could be kept warm for months, and we’ll keep you advised what comes next…
