Confirming a flurry of speculation that enchanted the blogosphere for several weeks, Universal Pictures has just announced that Bryan Singer is on-board to both direct and produce a full-screen adaptation of one of the most widely-loved titles in the history of Sci-Fi: Battlestar Galactica.

As the producer of 1994′s ‘The Usual Suspects’ and more than a hundred episodes of ‘House M.D.’, Bryan, 43, has a well-proven record in both TV and film – and for this job, he’ll need it: According to Universal’s press release, the upcoming movie is not planned as an extension of the TV franchise, but a whole new perception of the ‘BG’ idea.

Bryan will be joined in this sizable task by Glen Larson, who created the show back in 1978. There is no hint of a cast, or even a draft of the script at this point, but insiders tell the Insider the feature is planned to stand entirely alone from the series, and all they will share is the name.

Galactica fans are both devoted and countless. If Bryan disappoints them his reputation is toast.
