Director John Hughes, Dead at 59

Famed teen-film director John Hughes has died at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to NYC to visit family.

As a director, producer and writer, responsible for some of the most successful comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s, including National Lampoon’s Vacation, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Mr. Mom, Uncle Buck, Home Alone and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

The Lansing, Michigan native is credited with launching the careers of the brat pack and other stars of the 80′s and 90′s including Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, John Cusack, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, and Macaulay Culkin. His last film was 1991′s “Curly Sue.”

Following his commercial success, Hughes withdrew from Hollywood and lived a quiet life in suburban Chicago.
