Daniel Radcliffe ponders on fame
For a young actor whose movie success has already grossed over $4-billion, Daniel Radcliffe, 19, has a rather strange dream, “I really want to do a bungee jump,” he confides to reporters in a Manhattan cafe.
But before shooting started on Potter, part six — ‘The Half-Blood Prince,’ which opens next month, the young man now listed as Britain’s richest teenager took a rather bold step by himself — He acted stark-naked on Broadway.
After debuting in London in 2007, the Peter Shaffer play, Equus, transferred to New York, where some of the audience made Daniel see red. “From the moment I walked on-stage, I could hear these two girls talking,” he recalls. “Then they started calling to me; ‘Dan! Look over here!”‘ Even retelling the story gets Dan quite upset. “I’m not somebody who gets angry about stuff, but I came offstage seeing blood – I was furious!”
Hecklers aside, Daniel is a witty and articulate young man, but spending almost half his young life as a wizard has made it hard to determine just where Harry ends and Daniel begins, “When I started at 10 or 11, I was essentially saying the lines as I would say them. I realized this by about 14 – but it didn’t make sense to change, as that would cause a shift in the character.” he explains with a grin.
Where love is concerned, less well-informed gossip sites have linked the London-born actor to a positive catalog of desirable teens, but Daniel is by no means a fan, “Girls my own age are not an option,” he says. “They have to be ‘entertained’ more than older girls do. Most of the girls I’ve had serious things with are in their mid-20s.”
With the news that Dan recently refused to pose for some photos with the glasses and wand, it has to be asked — how does he feel about Harry? “I genuinely think I’m a better person for having done these films than I possibly would be, had I not.” he explains.
But fame, it seems, has its price — Now almost 20, Daniel is already seeing some long-term effects of international fame. “I’ve noticed I now make noise when I get up and sit down,” he says with concern. “My knees are just rotten – I refused to wear knee pads for too many stunts and I just beat them up. I’m now an old man in a young man’s body.” is his doleful response.
Bad knees or not, it’s still a body that countless young ladies would be delighted to share. Half-Blood Prince bows on July 15th. Go see the movie, then say he’s not hot…
