Former ‘Tonight Show’ sidekick Ed McMahon died early this morning at the age of 86-years-old, surrounded by family at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The colorful former sidekick of Johnny Carson, host of the Tonight Show, was known for his famous introduction for Carson, exclaiming every night for three decades, “Heeeeere’s Johnnnny!”
McMahon was the ultimate straight man for Carson’s subtle humor, laughing at every joke and even providing fodder for the show’s comedy.
A former radio announcer and pitchman, McMahon and Carson enjoyed a long and prosperous partnership, starting in the 1950s when they worked together on the game show, “Who Do You Trust?”
When Carson was named the new host of the Tonight Show in 1962, McMahon was hired as Carson’s announcer and co-host, where he remained until Carson retired in 1992.
After leaving the Tonight Show, McMahon became known as an energetic pitchman, most notably for his iconic role in awarding cash prizes to the winners of the American Family Publishers sweepstakes. He also hosted various television shows, including “Star Search” and “TV Bloopers, and Practical Jokes.”
In his later years McMahon experienced, much publicized financial and health troubles, with a threatened home foreclosure and a severe fall that resulted in a broken neck. His family says McMahon suffered from a whole host of health problems the last few months of his life.
“Hi-Yo!” Ed McMahon, may you rest in peace.

Wil be missed!
RIP Ed McMahon. The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon is timeless Americana. Let us also not forget that Ed McMahon was the host of the Star Search game show, which was really the original American Idol if you think about it.
