Sneak peek at Tim Burton’s new Alice

Published on June 22, 2009 at 2:03 PM

When Walt Disney brought the Lewis Carroll classic, Alice in Wonderland, to public attention in 1951, there’s no way he could foresee what Tim Burton has done to it now.

“It’s been Burton-ized” say producer, Richard Zanuck. “”We finished shooting in December. Now the live action is being merged with animation, then transferred into 3-D.”

The results you can see for yourself in these slides.

In this Burton-ized sequel, also being manged by Disney, Alice [HBO's 'In Treatment' lead, Mia Wasikowska, who beat Lindsay Lohhan to the coveted role.] attends a party and discovers she is to be proposed to in front of the whole crowd. Horrified by the prospect, she runs off, meets the White Rabbit [Michael Sheen,] disappears into his burrow and emerges in Wonderland, which she last saw ten years earlier but doesn’t recall.

There, waiting to greet her are The Mad Hatter [Johnny Depp, in his seventh Burton movie.] the White Queen [Anne Hathaway,] and the splendid Alan Rickman, making his Burton debut as the smooth Caterpillar.

Burton’s own girlfriend, Helena Bonham Carter also joins in as the evil Red Queen. And you can tell she’s Tim’s girl — The Queen lives in a huge, scary castle, and her favorite motto of ‘Off with their Heads!’ results in the moat being filled with former-enemies skulls.

But producer, Zanuck’s not worried by Tim’s ‘unique’ vision; “The book’s pretty dark,” he told USA. “This is for little people and people who read it when they were little 50 years ago.”

The premier is set for March 5, 2010, so book your seat now — With Johnny involved, the lines could be big.
