New episodes of Futurama ordered by Comedy Central

Matt Groening (“The Simpsons”) and David X. Cohen’s, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central, after getting axed by Fox six years ago. The series follows the adventures of a former New York pizza delivery boy Philip J. Fry after he is cryogenically frozen seconds after the start of the year 2000, and thawed out on New Year’s Eve 2999.  The space-age adventures of Fry, his love interest Turanga Leela, and Bender – a cigar smoking misanthropic robot – originally ran on Fox between 1999 and 2003. After it’s demise it was highly viewed in syndication, it was first brought back in four direct-to-DVD movies — released over the last couple of years.

Now a spokesperson for Comedy Central confirms that the cable network has ordered  26 new episodes to air beginning in mid 2010. The studio cites Futurama’s “blockbuster” performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.  We can’t wait!
