New Alien movie confirmed as a prequel

When rumors recently surfaced that 20th Century Fox were planning to remake the 1979 Ridley Scott classic, ‘Alien.’ the outpouring of hate and derision from the movie’s devoted admirers was a scream you couldn’t hope to not hear.

Well, good news — It seems the suits at Fox have reconsidered their dumb little plan. There is to be a new Alien movie – but it’s conceived as a prequel, not a contemptuous remake.

In a recent interview during the media junket for his own ‘new’ movie, ‘The Taking of Pelham, 1,2,3′ (itself a remake of 1974′s original, which starred Walter Matthau]  Tony Scott, brother of Alien’s director, Ridley, was asked about Fox’s plans for the film, and the news from his bro is quite good:

According to Tony, the new movie is due to start lensing by the end of the year, for a predicted release in the Summer of 2011. But Ridley will not be at the helm for this outing — the directorial duties will be discharged by Carl Rinsch, one of Ridley’s disciples.

Carl’s entire directorial catalog consists of only two movies — on both of which he was also the writer. So it’s hard to know if he’s up to the job. But with Ridley in overall charge of production, it looks like this long-stalled return to Nostromo could finally be in some capable hands.
