Bear Grylls almost loses finger in jungle mishap

Dauntless British adventurer, Bear Grylls had to undergo emergency surgery last week after almost completely severing one finger and losing the tip of another while filming the latest edition of his nature show.

The intrepid star of Discovery’s hugely popular ‘Man vs Wild’  was hacking his way through dense Vietnam jungle when his left hand touched a shard of bamboo. The razor-sharp fragment carved through his middle finger until it hit bone, and snipped off the top of the next one in line.

Doctors soon stemmed the blood loss and sewed up Bear’s wounds, but the finger was numb and he was quickly air-lifted to Britain for more extensive repairs. The former SAS soldier, whose survival shows have become almost a cult, then calmly posted photos of the wounds on his blog, ‘It looks a bit ugly and ragged,” he writes. “Hopefully the nerve damage will repair and I can get back for the next show, God willing.’

And this isn’t the 34-year old tough guy’s first brush with danger; Last December, Bear and his crew were crossing the ice caps of Antarctica on wind-powered skis, and he had to be rescued and flown back to base after breaking his shoulder in a sickening fall.

A new season of his antics hits Discovery next week, and if you love adventure you might want to watch. Just don’t order take out.
