Madonna faces delays on adoption appeal

Published on May 4, 2009 at 1:23 PM

The court hearing in Malawi which was called to decide whether Madonna can adopt another child from the country was adjourned this morning, with no end in sight. Chief Justice Lovemore Munroe told the court he would present his decision on who would get custody of Chifundo James at a future date yet to be set.

The case also got stranger as the man who claims to be the girl’s father, James Kambewa, appeared on the CBS network’s ‘Early Show’ today, saying he was now willing and able to look after his child, “I want to take care of her, and I’m capable to take care of my baby,” he told the hosts. Madonna’s spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg has quite different views; “Mercy has been in an orphanage since the day she was born,” she told the Associated Press via email today. It’s also been revealed that Mr. Kambewa has not even met the young girl.

Despite having already adopted a son, David Banda, 3, from that country, Malwai’s lower court denied Madge’s efforts to adopt the four-year old known as Mercy, because the star has not lived in Malawi for 18-months, as required by their laws. Should her appeal now prove successful, Mercy would join David and Madonna’s two natural children, Lourdes, 12, and Rocco, 8, to start a new life in the singer’s luxurious London abode.
