Rihanna’s leaked photos may sink her case
Chris Brown’s legal eagle, Mark Geragos has been pressing the court for a long delay before the trial begins, so he can find out who leaked the gruesome Police photos of Rihanna’s wounds to the press. And today, he got his wish.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, Patricia Schnegg, has ordered all concerned in the case to attend court on May 28 for a preliminary hearing on Brown’s double-felony charges.
The investigation into how the photos were leaked will continue meantime, and if a Police department staffer is named as the source the entire case against Brown could collapse. “These leaks can form the basis for a motion to dismiss the case for outrageous misconduct,” Geragos told reporters who were waiting outside the Court.
The Judge also decreed that the $1.4-million in designer jewelry Rihanna had borrowed to wear to a Grammy party on the fateful night should be released by Police and returned to its owners. The Gucci gown she was wearing was also retained for blood-stain analysis and photos, but no decision was made on its fate. Neither Chris or Rihanna were present to hear these new rules.
The pressing question on everyone’s minds is whether Rihanna will give evidence against Mr. Brown if the case ever gets to a trial. “The D.A. has not informed us whether Rihanna will be called,” her attorney, Donald Etra, told the seething mass of media humanity that had gathered on the Courthouse steps. But he made it clear his client would appear and give testimony if the court so required.
Even this preliminary hearing is not the end of Rihanna’s pain; It’s merely a chance for the two sides to present evidence to the Judge, who will determine if there is sufficient cause for a trial. Any such trial must then begin within ten days, but Chris is widely expected to cop a plea long before then.
