Demi Moore’s Twitter response helps save ‘suicidal woman’

Published on April 4, 2009 at 9:24 AM

Demi Moore is among a host of celebrities who regularly use Twitter to update everyone about their lives.  But in a case of using Twitter for more humanitarian purposes, Demi has apparently helped to save the life of a woman who was thinking about killing herself. Demi  got a message from one of her 370,000-plus subscribers reading, “Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp.” Shortly after, user name “Sandieguy” wrote, “gbye . . . gonna kill myself now.” Demi responded, via Twitter, and asked “Sandieguy” — whose profile says she’s from Silicon Valley and looking for a job — if she was serious.

The actress, 46, reposted the tweet on her own page with the message “hope you are joking”, bringing the crisis to the attention of other followers, who in turn contacted emergency services.

Police went to the aid of the Californian resident after being tipped off by a person in Dallas who had been reading tweets on the social networking site. The woman was located by police and reportedly taken to a local hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
