Madonna denied in adoption attempt
A Malawi court has denied Madonna’s attempt to adopt a 3-year-old girl Chifundo James, whose mother died shortly after her birth. The girl’s name means “Mercy” in the local language.
“I must have to decline to grant the application to Madonna,” judge Esmie Chondo said in a ruling following a closed-door hearing on Friday. Children’s advocacy groups have accused Madonna of abusing her immense wealth and influence to circumvent Malawian law. However court sources say Madonna’s adoption attempt for her second child from the southern African nation was denied because of the residency rule. The residency requirement for prospective parents is 18 to 24 months in Malawi.
When Madonna and her ex Guy Ritchie’s adopted child David Banda, 3, in 2006, the rule was finally waived and finalized last year. She reportedly considered Chifundo for adoption during that same visit and has remained in touch with the child’s guardians.
