Madonna appears in Malawi court to adopt 3-year-old girl – decision to be made on Friday
A Malawi court official says Madonna won’t know until Friday whether she will be allowed to adopt a 3-year-old girl Chifundo James, whose mother died shortly after her birth. The girl’s name means “Mercy” in the local language
Court official Thomson Ligowe confirmed that Madonna’s adoption application for her second child from the southern African nation, has been adjourned by the court until the end of the week.
Madonna and her ex Guy Ritchie’s adopted child David Banda, 3, was reunited with his biological father yesterday for the first time since he was taken out of the country in 2006 for an adoption which was finalised last year. She reportedly considered Chifundo for adoption during that same visit and has remained in touch with the child’s guardians.
The 50-year-old pop star appeared in court Monday and left about an hour later. It was not immediately known whether any of the girl’s relatives were present. Children’s advocacy groups have accused Madonna of abusing her immense wealth and influence to circumvent Malawian law requiring an 18- to 24-month assessment period before adoption.
