Grey’s Anatomy Dr. Izzie revealed to have fatal cancer

Published on March 14, 2009 at 9:09 AM

Some time ago we reported that Grey’s Anatomy character Dr. Izzie Stevens played by Katherine Heigl was going to be killed off at the end of this season.  James Pickens (hospital chief Dr. Richard Webber) told Usmagazine in February that Heigl would indeed be leaving the show. There were denials thereafter by Anatomy execs who apparently weren’t being totally candid. On last night’s Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Izzie asked her interns to conduct a diagnose on “Patient X” — not knowing it was her. It is discovered that patient x has skin cancer (metastatic melanoma) which had already spread to her brain. During a conversation between the interns one says “The girl’s pretty much toast,” while another one says “Survival rate is five percent.” The killing or rather ending the character of Dr. Izzie was conceived by top bosses in July last year after Heigl took her name off Emmy contention warranting that she didn’t feel she was “given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination.” There could be others on their way out and prominent on the list is T.R. Knight though Producer] Shonda Rhimes says that’s not the case. So all we can do is wait and watch as the story unfolds.
