Michael Phelps opens up about marijuana pipe photo

In an exclusive interview given to NBC, Matt Lauer swimming superstar Michael Phelps has opened up on the marijuana pipe picture that appeared in a British tabloid on February 1st this year.

He also said that what really has kept him worried is the effect and pain caused by his actions to his friends, family and other close people including his fans and he is the least bit concerned over the lost money on endorsements and other deals he has or had.

NBC has released excerpts from that interview. When asked the question of whether he was smoking marijuana Michael Phelps replied (avoiding a direct answer): “It was a bad mistake. I mean, we all know what, you know, what you and I are talking about. It’s a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment. And it’s something that, you know, I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake.”

Phelps has subsequently lost his sponsorship deal with Kellogg. He further said that the picture was taken in November of last year when he visited Columbia, S.C post winning 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics. USA Swimming suspended the Olympic great for three months.

He was at a friend’s house party and that there were just 7-8 guys in the house that time, a couple of whom he had not meet previously but still thought they could be trusted. He is not aware who took the photo things but now understands there are many people out there who want to take advantage of any situation they have.
