Kenneth Branagh close to naming Thor?

The character of Thor has been a feature of Marvel Comics’ superhero range for over fifty-years, and according to The Times of London, plans are well-advanced to give him the full Hollywood treatment. With his winged helmet, long blond hair, red cape and ever-present hammer he’s certainly dressed for the part, and when you add Kenneth Branagh as Director, his motion picture debut should be as impressive as his tool. “Ken gets the history of the character; He gets that it’s not just about action and adventure, it’s about what’s at the heart of the character.” says Joe Quesada, head of Marvel operations.

Best-known among comic connoisseurs for that mighty hammer and even greater sense of justice, Thor shares one trait with Superman – A milder alter-ego. And the contrast between them is said to be the core of Branagh’s film. There’s no official word yet on who might win the chance to portray the Norse god, but Ken was spotted lunching recently at Blairs with a young Norwegian actor namedAlexander SkarsgÃ¥rd. The two are repped by the same agency, and at a blonde-crowned 6’4″ tall the striking young Swede would certainly fit in with Branagh’s needs, but those in the know are being cagey with the details.

The movie is due to premiere in July of 2010. And if he proves a hit this guardian of justice will join his Marvel alumni for a new Avengers movie later in the year. Whoever wears the helmet, this film has potential that is almost off the charts.
