Former Monkee Peter Tork Battling Cancer
Peter Tork of 60′s band and TV show The Monkees, was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer discovered on the tongue, called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma and underwent extensive surgery yesterday in New York.
Tork is best known for his role as the bowl hair cut sort of the George Harrison of The Monkees.
Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma is uncommon and generally grows slowly on a person’s head and neck and is most frequently found in the salivary glands. According to RadarOnline in Tork’s case, it was discovered on the lower region of his tongue.
Doctors are said to optimistic after a biopsy of the now 67-year-old Tork (time flies), showed the cancer hasn’t spread beyond the initial site.
After surgery, Tork will have to undergo radiation but he is optimistic and looking forward to going back to work saying:
“I am extraordinarily grateful, amazed and humbled by the encouragement, affection and support I’ve received so far,” said Tork, who expects to get back to work in a matter of months. “Barring any complications, I fully expect to honor a performance date I have this June with (current band) Shoe Suede Blues.”
