Chris Brown to face charges today – here’s what’s going on behind the scenes

Since the alleged attack on February 8th, both Rihanna and Chris Brown have been a frequent feature of celebrity sites all over the world, and the story just doesn’t get old. Every day brings new details and claims from both sides that the other was liable in this sordid event. Mr. Brown has since hired crisis management people and attempted to ‘spin’ the story to reduce or even remove his own culpability. But even experts have limits on how much spin can be applied to a story that’s out of control.

Facing such impending failure, Mr. Brown’s next management choice was to alert the paparazzi about a supposedly ‘secret’ meeting with Rihanna amidst the immaculately manicured and gated seclusion of Miami’s exclusive Star Island. The reporters converged in drool-speckled glee, but both the encounter and the tearful front-page reunion he clearly desired as its career-saving payoff were a boundless and flagrant debacle.

The more certain outcome of this, and their less civil encounters is that Mr. Brown now faces charges of felony domestic battery, which could be filed as soon as today. These are serious charges, but a series of explicit pictures of Rihanna were taken the day after the reported attack and the impact of these on a jury, plus the gravity of the charges themselves could create a case from which Houdini himself would be taxed to escape.

Mr. Brown’s Attorney’s are apparently negotiating a plea deal that would reduce the case to a misdemeanor, and leave Mr. Brown serving only probation rather than the hard jail time one might expect for such unbridled malice. But sources tell HMG the impact of the media’s coverage makes this a highly unlikely last act. And even though the couple are reportedly back together, the D.A. could still proceed with the full case and summarily end Brown’s career.

Arraignment is scheduled to happen today, so all we can do now is wait for the news. And you can be sure a large part of the nation will be eagerly doing just that.
