Michael Phelps suspended from competition and dropped by Kellogg

Published on February 6, 2009 at 8:05 AM

All this fallout and my first thought is  did you save your Kellogg’s Phelps Corn Flakes box? Cause I’m thinking, it just got more valuable! Kellogg’s has announced that it will not renew its sponsorship contract with Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps because of the acknowledged smoking marijuana in a bong pipe incident. The company claims that Phelps’s behavior — caught on camera and published last Sunday by those cheeky bas**rds, Britain’s News of the World — was “not consistent with the image of [Kellogg's].”

The company has already put Phelps’ picture on boxes of its Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes.  Kellogg’s said its contract with Phelps expires at the end of February.

The fallout for Phelps continued as he has also been suspended for three months by USA Swimming!

Although no anti-doping rule was violated, the Colorado-based federation said: “We decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero”

He’s also lost their financial support for three months.

Phelps has kept the backing of many sponsors since the photos surfaced including Speedo, Omega watch and Visa, who have stuck by him.

With all these things going on probably the worst thing for Michael was explaining to his mother what happened, who just happens to be a middle-school principal.

“Seeing my mom reminded me of how it was the day after I got my DUI, and I swore to myself I’d never do that again,” Phelps told the Baltimore Sun, as reported by US Weekly. Phelps was arrested at age 19 for a DUI back in 2004.

“We’ve been talking a lot,” says Phelps.
