Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly have reportedly agreed to a a $750,000 settlement with a hospital that gave his newborn twins an overdose of blood thinner. However this may only be round 1 of lawsuits for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The Quaid twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were born in November 2007 via gestational carrier, they were accidentally given a massive overdose of the blood thinner Heparin just two weeks after their birth, and spent days battling for their lives.
The babies recovered and are now in good health, providing what Quaid, 54, called a “happy ending” to the medical scare.
A petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday shows the Quaids and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have agreed on the parents’ damages, but can still pursue claims for their children.
The documents state Cedars-Sinai is not admitting wrongdoing as part of the settlement but their actions and those of others who are suing them seem to say otherwise. The hospital has been fined $25,000 by the California Department of Public Health. A hospital spokesman said the facility cooperated with state authorities and intended to pay the fine. The hospital has since apologized to the patients’ families and said it has taken steps to better train the staff.
The Quaids sued drug maker Baxter Healthcare Corp. in Illinois over the drug’s packaging, but that case has been dismissed. The petition filed Monday indicates Baxter may also sue Cedars-Sinai, which administered too much Heparin to several patients in November 2007, including the Quaids’ twins.
