Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Guitar legend Joe Satriani is reportedly suing Coldplay for copyright infringement accusing the British rockers of plagiarizing one of his songs. In a copyright infringement suit, filed at Los Angeles federal court, Satriani claims the Yellow hitmakers copied segments from his 2004 instrumental If I Could Fly to use in their 2008 hit track Viva La Vida. The suit was filed the day after Coldplay made headlines around the world for bagging seven Grammy Award nominations, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year for the disputed track. Viva La Vida - the title track from the group’s latest LP - shot to number one in the U.K. and U.S. and is nominated for a Song of the Year Grammy at the upcoming February (09) awards.

But Satriani - who has played with Mick Jagger and Deep Purple - is seeking a jury trial, damages and “any and all profits” because the track includes “substantial original portions” of his song. The Grammy Award-winning guitarist is not the first to lay claim to Viva La Vida. In June, the American band Creaky Boards insinuated, via YouTube, that Coldplay had copied their song, ironically entitled Songs I Didn’t Write, after Chris Martin attended one of the little-known band’s gigs. Coldplay was quick to point out that Viva La Vida had been penned and demoed long before that concert.

On a side note Chris Martin’s famous wife Gwyneth Paltrow has ‘officially quit’ her status as a movie star, so she can focus her life to her kids.
The Shakespeare in Love Oscar winner insists she ceased to be a ‘movie star’ when she gave birth to her first child, Apple, in 2004, and the priorities in her life changed.
Now she’s content to make just one film per year, and spend as much time as possible with husband Chris Martin, Apple, and two-year-old son Moses.
Paltrow says, “I haven’t starred in a film since my kids were born, and I don’t think I will. I’ll never get these days back - they’re so delicious and precious, and hilarious, I don’t want to miss them.”
