Anne Hathaway’s ‘SNL’ monologue jokes about her ill-fated romance

Anne Hathaway hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend (October 4th) to promote her movie “Rachel Getting Married.” In addition to an opening sketch with Tina Fey as Sarah Palin at the VP debate and a turn as Mary Poppins, Hathaway actually joked about her ill-fated romance with rogue businessman Rafaello Follieri, during her opening monologue.
Referring to her boyfriend of four years Follieri - who is awaiting sentencing on 14 counts of wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and money laundering - she said:
“I’ve had a busy summer. I did some travelling, I’ve got a new movie out… and I broke up with my Italian boyfriend and two weeks later he was sent to prison for fraud. I mean, we’ve all been there. Am I right ladies?” She then joked that she’d started a new relationship with an internet scam artist, “The experience made me feel pretty gullible. I was ready to swear off dating and then I met an amazing new guy.
“We met on the internet. I don’t usually read letters from strangers. How often do you get an email from a Nigerian prince? He is such a sweetheart and he is pretty wealthy. He asked all about my family, and my social security number. Yesterday was our one month anniversary. I know it’s sappy but I sent him something I knew he’d love. A mix-tape and $100,000.”
Hathaway’s ice breaking monologue was more surprising after rebuffing David Letterman’s attempts to discuss her ex-boyfriend, during her appearance last week.
Hathaway’s appearance on “SNL” helped the show score one of its highest-rated shows since 2002. Tina Fey, who reprised her role as vice-presidential candidate and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was also a huge draw.
