A few nice moments but Emmy Awards fall flat
There were a few nice heart warming moments on the 60th Emmy Awards last night but overall the show was quite dull. One of the best moments for me was the appearance of Christina Applegate. Talking on the red carpet at her first awards show since the breast cancer ordeal, she said:
“Things happen, and you have to really, really embrace your life. It’s a great day? I’ve got a pretty dress on and lipstick, and it’s something I haven’t done in two months… Things happen, and you have to sit back and really, really embrace your life.
“For me to have a voice and be the voice of a 30-something-year-old girl going through this and dispelling the misnomers that it’s an older woman’s disease is a big part of this for me.”
Applegate later took to the stage as an award presenter alongside actor Christian Slater who was very gracious, but showing her spitfire spirit she challenged him to a friendly ratings competition after he showered her with compliments.
She said: “Thank you so much Christian, that’s very sweet and a truly lovely sentiment but it doesn’t change one bit the fact that I’m going to crush you in the ratings, so good luck to you!”
Christina’s Samantha Who? co-star Jean Smart added backstage: “I’ve never seen an actress who’s so beloved by her cast and crew. I feel very protective of her. But she’s a very spiritual person and she got through (cancer).”
By contrast, when the five reality show hosts Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, Heidi Klum, Ryan Seacrest and Tom Bergeron tried to entertain at the beginning of the show, you could feel the air draining from the Nokia Theater. They went on about how they hadn’t come up with an opening before summoning William Shatner onto the stage to rip Klum’s tear away clothes off. It may have been a tad ungracious for Jeremy Piven to diss his hosts on-air, but he was probably speaking for everyone in the room and millions more yawning at home. An opening montage of familiar faces reciting familiar lines from TV history was an OK idea but not particularly interesting or funny. After a glacially paced first hour, some well-timed political jokes and barbs—plus star turns by the British comedian/actor Ricky Gervais and Don Rickles, were uplifting. During the very long three hours, there were not many surprises except for the commercial-break revelation that Rose is pregnant with Derek’s baby on ” Grey’s Anatomy.” Let’s hope next year the show goes back to one singular host that can entertain!

The 60th Emmy Awards last night had many surprising winner. But overall the show was quite dull. Christina Applegate was worth talking about though.
