According to reports, terrorists have denounced and threatened Sir Paul McCartney, if he moves forward with his upcoming, first ever concert in Israel.
Extremists have implied suicide bombers would target McCartney should he go on with his plans to perform in Israel.
A self-styled preacher of hate named Omar Bakri making his weekly internet broadcast to fellow extremists from his home in Lebanon, where he has lived in exile since being banned from returning to Britain, claimed that the former Beatle’s decision to take part in the concert, which is part of the Jewish state’s 60th anniversary celebrations, had made him an enemy of all Muslims. He also declared: “We have what we call ‘sacrifice’ operatives who will not stand by while he joins in a celebration of their oppression.”
Insiders report that Sir Paul 65, was shocked but refused to be intimidated. In an interview with the Israeli media yesterday McCartney said: “I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think and I have many friends who support Israel.”
A spokesman for Sir Paul declined to comment on the threat, saying: “Paul’s Friendship First concert is about his music. Paul’s is a message of peace.”
McCartney previously planned to go to Israel with the Beatles in 1965 but they were barred by the Jewish nation’s government over fears they would corrupt young people. Isreal’s ambassador in London, Ron Prosor, wrote a letter to the surviving band members to express his regret over Israel’s missed opportunity to learn from the most influential musicians of the decade. He also invited them to play this year’s celebration of Israel’s 60th anniversary.
Paul’s concert is scheduled to be held at Tel Aviv’s Park Hayarkon on September 25. Last night McCartney performed his first concert in the Ukraine, playing to tens of thousands in the capital Kiev.
