Movie News: Michael Douglas as Liberace, Dark Night round 2

Director Steven Soderbergh is working on a biopic of the one and only Liberace! Variety reports that Soderbergh has picked Michael Douglas, who he worked with in ‘Traffic’, to play Liberace.
Matt Damon is also in talks to play Scott Thorson, Liberace’s alleged companion of five years. Scott sued Liberace in 1982 for $113 in palimony. Even though Liberace denied he was gay, he still settled with Scott for $95,000 in 1986. In 1987, Liberace passed away of complications from AIDS at the age of 67.

Warner Bros. plans to rerelease “The Dark Knight” in January, just in time for the height of Academy Awards voting season. The film’s huge commercial and critical success has spurred talk of possible Oscar nominations for its director Christopher Nolan, producers and cast — most specifically Bale’s co-star, Health Ledger, for the late actor’s edgy performance as the Joker.
To date, “Dark Knight” has taken in about $512 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in Imax grosses. A pre-Oscars re-release would help assure its topping $1 billion worldwide, and any traction with nominations or wins would likely mean even greater box office.
For me it just doesn’t sit well to try to influence Oscar selections by doing a rerelease but perhaps that’s just me.
