Mickey Rourke The Wrestler has won the Golden Lion at the 65th Venice Film Festival
The Venice Film festival, which unofficially kick-starts the awards season leading to the Oscars, will be remembered chiefly for comeback king Mickey Rourke.  Director Darren Aronofsky and actor Mickey Rourke
received a standing ovation from reporters during the film’s press conference, as parallels were drawn with Rourke’s own troubled past. In The Wrestler, Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, who has a blossoming romance with an ageing stripper, played by Marisa Tomei.  His performance as the title character, the wrestler, an aging professional boxer who cannot come to terms with the fact that time has taken its toll on him, has garnered rave reviews. Even so Rourke lost out in the best actor award to Italy’s Silvio Orlando, who picked up the Coppa Volpi for his role in Il Papa di Giovanna. Even so, Rourke who was a box office draw in the 1980s,
has made a remarkable comeback. The jury of the world’s oldest film festival, praised Rourke’s work as “a truly heartbreaking performance, in the very sense of the word,” and bestowed the actor with the coveted Golden Lion awards.
