Vin Diesel says two more Riddick Sequels on the way

Vin Diesel says two more Riddick Sequels on the wayFour years after his character Richard B. Riddick last graced the silver screen, Vin Diesel tells MTV News, that two Riddick sequels are being written as we speak.

“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.” “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”

Pretty ambitious talk for a movie that was rather poorly received when it opened domestically in 2004. The movie did have legs in the long hail and performed well overseas, and also spawned a best-selling video game, so maybe it broke even financially?  Diesel, insists though that the long time between sequels is not because the project had lost momentum, but a quest to getting everything right. Diesel asserted:

“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it. It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”

I still wonder though if Diesel is deluding himself here.  I am a sci-fi fan but I couldn’t say I really liked the story that much.  Did anyone out there, who watched The Chronicles of Riddick actually really like it enough to want to see a sequel?
