Broadway fans not embracing Katie Holmes so far

Katie Holmes’ first Broadway venture in “All My Sons” is not proving to inspire advance ticket sales. Execs for the show were hoping that a big name could drive up ticket sales, in the same way that other “stars” like Mario Lopez in A Chorus Line and Clay Aiken in Spamalot helped boost sales.

American Express card holders were able to buy tickets to the show a few weeks ago, but not many did.  MSNBC’s The Scoop now reports that ticket sales continue to be disappointing. The producers have also put a MySpace page for the show and so far they only have one friend.

A source said that the show is in danger of closing early. A spokesperson for the show denies the rumors, “That information is totally false. There is a healthy advance for the show, and there is no chance of the run being shortened.”

It seems that producers are puzzled by the ticket short fall with some speculating it has to do with Katie’s Dawson Creek days. One source says:

You can’t say it’s the economy, because there are shows, like ‘Mamma Mia’ that are selling out. It’s not that Katie’s bad in the part. She’s good enough. The producers are just getting the feeling people still want to view Katie as sweet little Joey Potter.”

Nobody dares mention it, but one wonders if audiences are turned off by the press Katie gets, for being brainwashed or crazy for marrying Tom Cruise.

“Sons” opens Oct. 16 and runs through Jan. 11.
