Columbia Pictures espionage thriller “Edwin A. Salt” once expected to star Tom Cruise, will undergoe a gender change. The script will reportedly be redrafted by screenwriter Kurt Wimmer as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie. Cruise had long been seen as the leading candidate for the project, but that flirtation ended recently. The well-regarded script has had several top male movie stars interested but Angelina Jolie took a liking to it, and boom the studio’s decided to rewrite it and do a title change. Jolie proved once again in her recent flick “Wanted” that she is the rare female who is viable in an action genre that has been almost the exclusive domain of men. Jolie is still reportedly hammering out the details of the deal to play the title character, a CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence. Philip Noyce remains onboard as director and Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash are producing. If everything falls into place, the film shapes up as a return vehicle for Jolie, who recently gave birth to her golden twins.
