John Edwards admits to sexual affair but says baby is not his

In a bombshell new interview with ABC’s Nightline, one-time Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards admits that he lied repeatedly about not having an affair with the woman rumored to be the mother of his illegitimate child.
After weeks of avoiding affair allegations from The National Enquirer, the former Senator came clean today, Friday. This may be a form of damage control as the Enquirer has closed in with new photos of Edwards with the potential ‘love child’ of his affair.
Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff that he did have an affair with 42-year old videographer Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her (does that make it better or worse?).
Edwards also reportedly denied he was the father of Hunter’s baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test. Edwards bases his denial of being the childs’ father based on timing of the baby’s birth on February 27, 2008. He said his affair ended too soon for him to have been the father. A former campaign aide, Andrew Young, has said he was the father of the child but also has not taken a paternity test leaving some to believe he is part of a cover up.
The timing of these situations is never good and with Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, battling terminal cancer it’s an even uglier situation.
Update: After the story broke Friday, Edwards released a statement that said:
“In 2006, I made a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs. I recognized my mistake, and I told my wife that I had a liaison with another woman, and I asked for her forgiveness. Although I was honest in every painful detail with my family, I did not tell the public.”
