It used to be largely small studios and struggling directors who took jobs doing movie retreads, but now it’s the top talent in Hollywood.
Reviewing movie announcements over the last couple of days we have: The trades reporting that Darren Aronofsky has signed on with MGM to do a remake of “RoboCop,” the Paul Verhoeven film that has already spawned two inferior sequels. The film is being written by David Self, who’s hot off scripting a remake of “The Wolfman” for Universal. Well at least Self has practice lately!
Down in San Diego at Comic-Con, remake mania was also in full bloom. Robert Rodriguez was at one panel, talking about his upcoming remake of “Red Sonja,” which he’ll produce with girlfriend - homewrecker, Rose McGowan playing the lead role. Another panel was devoted to a new version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” which stars Keanu Reeves and is due this Christmas from Fox. The original was a landmark sci-fi film directed by Robert Wise, who got his start editing “Citizen Kane.” The new version is directed by Scott Derrickson, who got his start directing “Hellraiser: Inferno. Sci-fi enthusiasts, can also look forward to “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” and “Terminator Salvation” soon, plus horror buffs have the relaunch of “The Wolfman,” and the latest “Saw” installment to look forward to.
Meanwhile, New Line has announced that it’s doing a second sequel in the “Harold & Kumar” series. Always respectful, Variety noted that “storyline is being kept under wraps, meaning no one has written a word–they’re just greenlighting the movie because the sequel made a lot of dough earlier this year.
*And then there is Wolverine, which is a spinoff of the X-Men movie trilogy and already filmed so it doesn’t really count in this list but still worth mentioning. Hugh Jackman thrilled comic book fans at Comic-Con in San Diego, California on Thursday - by turning out to thank them for his career.
The Aussie actor was a last minute addition to the convention when he showed up to introduce the first trailer footage from his X-Men spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
After receiving a standing ovation from X-Men fanatics, a beaming Jackman said he marked the date for Comic-Con in his diary so he could personally thank fans for their support.
He said, “Without these guys, there would be no Wolverine, and I would probably be in a gas station serving gas. These guys are the most loyal, hardcore, supportive fans out there, so there was no way I was going to miss it.”
Jackman, who plays the hairy X-Men mutant, revealed the teaser footage he previewed had literally just come off the reel, explaining the much-anticipated new film had just been completed.
