Jimmy Fallon will test ‘Late Night show’ online

Jimmy Fallon will be taking over for Conan O’Brien on Late Night while ginger locks takes the late night primo spot from Jay Leno. On a side note, Leno said recently that he’s done with NBC next year, and networks and syndicators are poised to woo him when he’s free to open contract talks. The NBC suits announced today that Jay Leno’s last appearance on the Tonight Show is scheduled for May 29, 2009. Conan O’Brien will step in on June 1, 2009.
The producer of Late Night, Lorne Michaels (who also heads up Saturday Night Live), wants Jimmy to “to work out as many of the rough spots in his presentation” online before beginning his stint on the broadcast show.
The web performances will likely begin in the fall, long before the transition in ‘09.
The online videos probably won’t be anything like an entire hour-long show. Michaels knows that seasoning is important. He picked O’Brien out of obscurity to fill Letterman’s old slot at NBC, then stuck with him despite savage early reviews. He wants to make sure Fallon’s transition is less painful.
Michaels said, “I expect that we’ll do something like 5 or 10 minutes.”
He went on to say Jimmy most likely will be on every night, to try to establish the rhythm of a nightly show: “I’m going to post them at 12:30 every night, so people will begin to look for Jimmy at that time.”
