Legendary rock band THE WHO were honored on Saturday at the third VH1 Rock honors ceremony, which will air Thursday on the cable channel.
The annual event pays tribute to bands who have influenced the sound of rock music.
Bands such as the FOO Fighters, Pearl Jam, The Flaming Lips, Incubus and Tenacious D payed tribute to the British music legends, covering songs from such Who albums as “Tommy,” “The Who Sell Out” and “Quadrophenia.”
Actor/singer Jack Black showed his admiration for The Who before his own performance, by saying, “It’s an honor to honor what I consider to be the greatest band of all time. Wanna know why they were the greatest? Because they were the first ones to really rock hard.”
Celebrity guests such as actors Sean Penn, David Duchovny, Mila Kunis and Adam Sandler were on hand to introduce the acts, who covered their favorite The Who tracks.
Who guitarist Pete Townshend and lead singer Roger Daltrey closed the special concert at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion with a performance of some of the band’s greatest hits.
Frontman Roger Daltrey says, “I have had a life of absolute privilege and wonder. How could it ever be bittersweet? I miss old friends, but they are with me. When we start playing our music, John (Entwistle) and Keith (Moon) echo with us all the time, so it’s kind of like they never left.”
