Jason Segel gives Muppets Movie update

Jason Segel as we reported here, has been lined up to pen Disney’s upcoming Muppet movie. Segal is a veteran of Apatow productions such as Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Knocked Up, and he also scripted Forgetting Sarah Marshall. For a guy growing up wanting to be Kermit The Frog, writing the new Muppets movie is a dream come true. Jason literally had to beg Disney bosses to let him script the new film. And when they initially turned him down he wowed them with his knowledge of the lovable puppet stars. Now, in a new interview, Segal revealed a few interesting tidbits about the Muppet movie script.
The movie is going to do things ’80’s’ style - says Segal, “We are trying to bring it back to the early ’80s movies where it’s not Muppets in the Sahara or Muppets Underwater. It’s the Muppets getting back together to put on a show, to save the studio.”
He also confirmed that Sam the Eagle is in the movie, as are Statler and Waldorf.
There’s no word about a possible release date in the interview. There is no doubt, The Muppets’ screen fortunes could use a boost. From 1979’s The Muppet Movie, to the 1984’s The Muppets Take Manhattan were all solid box-office performers. However subsequent films haven’t fared as well. The original movies were as appealing to parents as they were to kids, but perhaps lost that edge in the later films. So Segel’s involvement is encouraging, to say the least.
