Paul Newman gave over $120 million to charity

Paul Newman as we reported here, is rumored to be stricken with lung cancer. A short time ago Newman’s agent Toni Howard made a very brief statement that the story is “not true”, but offered no details and latter recanted the statement. Our gut feeling is somethings up, but we really want to believe him!
Meanwhile according to new reports, the aging legendary actor turned over the entire value of his ownership in “Newman’s Own,” the company that makes salad dressing and cookies, to charity.
The extraordinary gift was completed over a two-year period in 2005 and 2006. Newman and actress wife Joanne Woodward have never been Hollywood types. They’ve lived their lives quietly in Westport, Conn., for the last 50 years and this philanthropic gesture done so discreetly is typical of their low key style.
The total amount of his donations to Newman’s Own Foundation Inc. comes to $120 million.
Newman also personally gave away $8,746,500 in 2006 to a variety of groups that support children, hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast, education and the arts.
This news of Newman’s extraordinary generosity might seem to be evidence of action taken in reaction to finding out he may be dying. But reportedly this was just a way to celebrate his 80th birthday, and an acknowledgment that he wanted to make sure his charities would continue to thrive.
