Sharon Stone sparks outrage after Chinese earthquake “karma” comment

Sharon Stone has sparked outrage after suggesting that the earthquake disaster, which has left more than 68,000 people dead and five million Chinese homeless, was a result of “karma” for China’s policy in Tibet.
Speaking to the press at the amfAR’s annual Cinema Against AIDS 2008 benefit at Cannes Film Festival, she said: “All these earthquakes and stuff happened and I thought, ‘Is that karma?’ When you are not nice, bad things happen to you. I’m not happy about how the Chinese are treating the Tibetans, I don’t think anyone should be unkind to anyone else. They’re not being very nice to the Dali Lama, who’s a good friend of mine.”
True on the second count with Tibet, but calling a horrible natural disaster, karma is so wrong.
China’s largest cinema chain UME Cineplex has banned films starring Sharon Stone following the remarks. But unless there running old movies or films that went straight to dvd in the US, there’s not much to ban though these days. Okay I am just being snippy, on further review according to imdb.com, Stone has at least four movies coming up between now and 2010, including “Streets of Blood,” “Five Dollars a Day” and “The Year of Getting to Know Us.”
The Associated Press quotes a Chinese actor as saying: “The earthquake is not only China’s disaster, but a disaster for all of mankind. Sharon Stone’s performance shows that not only does she lack love, but she lacks humanity. How could she say such things?”
Here’s the video of Sharon speaking to the press about the earthquake and the “Karma” comment. Note there is a Chinese language news commentator speaking at the beginning and at the end.
