Desperate Housewives plot twist - is Nicolette Sheridan’s character gone?

Last night’s episode of Desperate Housewives had a surprise plot twist.
Nicolette Sheridan’s character Edie, the trouble making blonde temptress, suddenly packed her bags and rode her convertible off into the sunset without a word about if she would (or would not) ever return.
Whispers of Sheridan’s departure have been circulating for weeks, but both ABC and Sheridan’s publicist have refused to address the rumors.
A character’s end is usually last episode of season material, but Edie departed in the second to last show of the season!
Show creator and executive producer Marc Cherry only confirmed Edie’s departure but was purposely evasive about whether she would be back.
He says, yes, Edie’s gone and “won’t be back for a few years.”
But Cherry already announced the show will finish after the 2010-11 season, just three years from now so what gives?
Seems another recent rumor that Desperate Housewives will adopt a “flash-forward” Lost-like narrative device, could restore Edie’s presence on Wisteria Lane sooner than expected. Cherry was asked if this might solve this current Edie conundrum?
“I only address one rumor at a time…We’ll have to wait until next season and see,” Cherry replied.
